Decadence

Decadence

The colour purple is a symbol of style, fortune, elegance and wealth.  Originally associated with royalty, it now provides a contemporary expression of love.   If you are hoping to have a dramatic and contemporary feel to your special occasion, then a decadent theme could be perfect for you.

Decadence blends mystery and romance in unique harmony.  You can make a decadent theme work for you at any time of year, but this theme really comes into its own during the darker, moody autumnal and winter months.

If your special occasion is being held in an extravagant or historical venue, such as a castle, then a decadent theme will perfectly emphasise the character and atmosphere of the venue.

The colour palette of this theme should be mainly focused around rich purples, but consider adding an extra whisper of lavishness by combining the purple with complimentary metallic colours, such as gold or silver.  Black also works extremely well with the purple and adds to the depth of the theme.

Flowers and floral displays should also reflect the indulgence of a decadent theme.  Large headed roses in dark colours or dark purple cala lilies work well, especially when displayed in abundant bunches with masses of trailing ivy.  Candles within the floral displays also look stunning.

Lighting for a decadent theme should reflect the same strong characteristic of the decadent theme, use dark heavy candles set in austere candelabras.  Use the lighting to capture and highlight some of the architectural features of the venue.

Below are some suggestions of decorations and accessories that could be used to add to the lavishness of you event:

To begin decorating your venue, think about layering rich heavy fabrics such as velvets and silks.  Large bows and swags also add to the decadent feel of the room

A scattering of metallic confetti in gold, silver or purple will reflect candle light is a stunning way. Alternatively use clear or purple sparkling table gems.
Carry the decadent feel across your tables by tying napkins with large indulgent bows
Feathers can add warmth and luxurious texture to a decadent table, simply leave on or two in each guest's wine glass. When the wine is poured each guest will tip their feathers out, scattering them sumptuously across the table
Reflect the decadent theme in your favours by using dark colours and similar indulgent bows used to tie your napkins

If you really feel like going all out with the magnificence of a decadent theme, consider some of the ideas below:

Instead of a simple champagne reception, have guests greeted by the splendour of a champagne fountain!
To entertain during the reception, consider hiring a well known performer.  Think about who your favourites are, but be prepared as Elton may be out of your price range!
Add to the indulgence of your meal, by offering guests delicious and rich cheese and port at the end of the meal, served up on delectable cheese boards
