This weeks ‘Interview with’ comes from a simply amazing floral designer, Kerry Wilkinson of Tineke Floral Designs. We don’t know about you, but we adore blooms at The Last Detail. There hasn’t been a wedding we’ve ever attended when we aren’t bowled away by the intricate nature of the bouquets and button holes. Here’s a great insight into Kerry’s favourite flowers, the hot colours for brides in 2012 and how even pumpkins can make the loveliest of vases…
When and why did you decide to go into floral design?
I got interested in floral design at a very early age – 11 years old! I remember passing a flower shop and just being fascinated and wanting to be part of it all – I harassed the local florist until she eventually let me work with them.
Could you tell us a little what makes you that little bit different to other florists?
I would say our innovative ideas and ability to interpret what our clients would like for their big day and also impeccable customer service. And of course, fabulous flowers!
What trends are emerging in wedding flowers in 2012?
We are using a lot of the lovely large blousy Hydrangeas which is great, as one of my favourites.
Tell us your favourite flower? Does this influence the arrangements you make for others?
As above, Hydrangeas are one of my favourites and I would say this does influence arrangements for others as we seem to have a lot delivered every week to the shop from Columbia and Holland. Another ultimate favourite is stocks but these are very seasonal.
What type of centre piece is popular at the moment? Tall or short? Extravagant or simple? Why do you think that is?
People are going more towards the extravagant and we have provided a lot of tall arrangements this year – quite different to the DIY shabby chic look last year.
What is the most unusual request you have had?
I wouldn’t say unusual but different, we provided flowers for an autumn wedding within carved pumpkins!
Give us a top flower tip for a bride who has just started to plan her wedding?
Visit say 3 florists and book the right one as soon as possible to avoid any disappointment – ideas can always be tweaked at a later date.
What is your favourite floral arrangement you have ever created?
A Tall design incorporating over a hundred of my favourite stocks – the scent was divine!
What do you enjoy about designing wedding florals?
The end result, job satisfaction and feedback from the couples after the big day
What colour schemes are the most popular this season?
Blues and peaches
Does the type of flower depend on season?
Yes, which I think is lovely. It’s always best to stick with seasonal flowers as they are at the best quality and price. You could look at a wedding album with Tulips and realise straight away that it’s a spring wedding, that’s one of the reasons I love being a Florist so much.
What event is your dream to design floral arrangements for?
I would love to provide flowers for a party that David and Victoria Beckham were planning!
